Introduction

The Olympics are underway and there are only a few more events left! Here’s a guide to how many events are left in each sport.

A Look Back at the History of the Olympics

Since the first ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC, athletes have been coming together to compete in a variety of sports. The games were held every four years in Olympia, Greece, and included running, jumping, wrestling, boxing, and equestrian events. Participation was open to men of Greek descent who were free citizens – married women were not allowed to compete or even watch. The winners of each event were crowned with olive wreaths and received immortal fame and glory.

The Olympics were outlawed by Emperor Theodosius I in 393 AD, but they were resurrected over 1500 years later in Athens, Greece. The first modern Olympics took place in 1896 and included 280 participants from 13 nations competing in 43 events. Since then, the Olympics have evolved into the massive international event we know today, with over 11000 athletes from 205 countries competing in 306 events across 28 different sports.

Looking back at the history of the Olympics, it’s amazing to see how far they’ve come – and how much further they still have to go.

The Evolution of the Olympics

The Olympics are always evolving. New events are added and old events are dropped on a regular basis. It can be hard to keep track of which events are still in the Olympics and which have been dropped. Here is a list of some of the most notable changes to the Olympics over the years:

-In 2020, skateboarding, surfing, and climbing will be added as official Olympic sports.
-In 2016, rugby sevens and golf were added as official Olympic sports.
-In 2012, women’s boxing was added as an official Olympic sport.
-In 2008, BMX racing was added as an official Olympic sport.
-Tennis was an official Olympic sport from 1896 to 1924 and then again from 1988 to 2008. It will return as an official sport in 2020.
-Baseball was an official Olympic sport from 1992 to 2008. It will return as an official sport in 2020.
-Softball was an official Olympic sport from 1996 to 2008. It will return as an official sport in 2020.

The Future of the Olympics

The future of the Olympics is always uncertain. Will they continue to be the same every four years, or will they eventually die out? Only time will tell. For now, we can only enjoy the games while they last.

Conclusion

There are a total of 302 events in the Rio Olympics. Of these, 202 are men’s events and 100 are women’s events. Athletics (track and field) has the most events with 47, followed by swimming with 34.
